Like Ozempic, it targets the GLP-1 receptors, with similar effects on appetite and blood sugar. But Tirzepatide is also an agonist that activates the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptors in the stomach and brain.

Mounjaro and Zepbound are the same compound: tirzepatide. However, Mounjaro has been branded by Eli Lily as a treatment for type 2 diabetes.

The medication was developed by Eli Lilly and approved for weight management by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in late 2023. At a list price of $1,059.87 for a one-month supply, Zepbound is not exactly affordable for many people.

Zepbound starts to work after your first dose. But it may take a few weeks before you start to lose weight. Keep in mind that weight loss will also depend on your calorie intake and your exercise routine.

Zepbound can cause serious side effects, including:

Severe stomach problems. Stomach problems, sometimes severe, have been reported in people who use Zepbound. Tell your healthcare provider if you have stomach problems that are severe or will not go away.

Kidney problems (kidney failure). Diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting may cause a loss of fluids (dehydration), which may cause kidney problems. It is important for you to drink fluids to help reduce your chance of dehydration.
